Before you jump down my throat—I love Twitter.
It’s always been my favorite social network.
I enjoy the chatter—and the banter.
But, what really hooks me is the connection.
That said, Twitter wasn’t helping grow my business. At least, not yet.
So, I decided to take the advice from other copywriters who were further ahead of me. I chose to put my talents to work in another way.
I got off Twitter—and went to Upwork.
Side Hustles Are More Than Platitudes
My wife was right.
Oh, how it pains me to say it! But, she was.
I got rid of a 1,700+ follower Twitter. I took advice from other top Twitter users.
I started a new Twitter account in January of this year. I thought Elon Musk would favor a new account that’s working to grow rather than an old account.
I have about 90 followers on the new account as I write this.
And while I like the folks I interact with—and enjoy meeting and learning from there—they’re not my ideal target audience.
They’re other creators like me. And to my wife’s point—they’re not going to buy from me.
So, onto Upwork it was.
I made the commitment to send out 2 proposals per day. I ended up submitting 22 this past week.
I took the advice of Beau Schutlz and sought to customize each proposal. Reach the client. Understand what they want. Find their name in their past reviews. Actually take the time to know the person before asking for the hire.
I wasn’t getting anywhere. No messages. No follow-ups. I’m not even sure whether my proposals were getting read.
Someone asked how it was going. I was honest.
But, I gave it to God. If He wanted this to be successful, then I wanted to give Him the glory. My wife and I even chatted about this on the way home from a family day trip from Mount Vernon, Virginia.
I then came home to this.
I got some love from the Upwork team.
And even from Beau himself.
In fact, he’s been a huge help in the DMs.
So, I guess my wife and I were both right—in a way.
I got off Twitter—and I found a great opportunity. But, then it was my legendary Twitter crew that was there to celebrate with me—and encourage me forward.
This was all in the span of one week.
Oh, and the client? Very happy with my work. Here’s to it being a long-term relationship (with maybe even some future referrals)!
A guy can dream, right?
